In the game you could freely change a normal human avatar's appearance by wearing parts. If you put on pointy ears you'd change into looking like an elf, if you put on a flat nose you'd end up looking like an orc... and the only paid avatar was the "full body skeleton". His friends even chided him that there is no meaning if you always wear full body armor. So he bought the skin and gave himself a back story to fit.

iirc elves tell him that it's because of a curse that he's looking like that, while his real body is somewhere else (or something like that). At first he thinks that it's not true, because it's that avatar he chose on character creation screen, but when they perform the curse lifting ritual on him he regains his humanoid form, but turns back to skeleton right away because the curse is really strong and the ritual wasn't strong enough. After that his mission becomes to find a way to lift the curse.

Well, it's just an appearance thing for real fo real. To put it bluntly, he is in the game world but is still bound by some of the game constructs while the natives are not. That curse is also a blessing in disguise in that way as he is an anomaly-singularity in that world. in it, but not from it. As such he is bound to two different sets of laws of existence. And as far as it is known possibly the only one.
